2010 Songwriter Cabin

Sheboygan Lighthouse

I just returned from the 3rd annual Sheboygan Songwriter’s Cabin in Wisconsin. Many of you know that every year I take the Greyhound bus up north to meet a few songwriters from around the country for several days of collaboration.

This year there was less whiskey consumption, but we managed to drink plenty of wine from our coffee mugs and create many memories. Feel free to ask me about the hangover awards, cliff golfing, birthday party gender questions, beach bonfires, Lake Michigan sunrises… oh, and the songs too.

Joining me at the cabin were: (take a listen)
Brianna Lane (Minneapolis, MN)
Liz Stahler (San Francisco, CA)
Jeremiah Nelson (Madison, WI)
Josh Harty (Madison, WI)

I’ll be debuting my new songs at the September 10th show at Stir: Live & Loud (Council Bluffs, IA). I hope you can make it out.

If BH&T7D went “Christian Rock”

This past weekend, I took the band out of town for a couple of shows through SD and IA. During our many hours together in the van we stumbled across a Christian Rock Radio Station, and something changed. We have been “reborn!” From this point on we are renaming our set list to better convey our new found faith. [This is a joke]

Talking to God= Talking to God’s Only Son
Lay Her Down= Kneel me Down

KMTV’s “Morning Blend”

This morning we wiped the sleep from our eyes and loaded up the gear for our live performance on KMTV’s “Morning Blend.” Everyone at the station was very friendly and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. You can view the video of our performance on their website.

This weekend we’ll be performing in Sioux Falls, SD and Sioux City, IA, and then returning back to Omaha for The Farnam Street Festival on Saturday. Hope to see you there!

The TiK ToK Story

It was back in February that I was sitting at a neighborhood bar in Benson, NE when I began taking a poll with the regulars: what song would you like to hear the Seven Deadlies cover? My friend challenged me to cover KE$HA’s TiK ToK in my own “Hoshaw” style. I had never heard of the song, despite it being #1 on the Billboard charts at the time, so she played it for me on the jukebox. Over the following weeks it had stayed in my mind, but I wasn’t seriously planning on covering the tune, until I had several people stop me on the street and say, “I heard you’re doing a cover of TiK ToK.” So on March 12th, I found myself on my laptop looking up the lyrics. To my surprise within a couple hours I had rearranged, reinterpreted and “hoshawed” the dance club hit.

I was presented with a friendly challenge, to find substance in a seemingly shallow song. What I discovered is when changing the delivery of the lyrics, the message of the song can take off in a brand new direction. What once was a dance club tune that seems to relish in the party lifestyle, can now be interpreted as a more introspective and dark accounting of a day’s events.

Since this YouTube video was posted, almost 4 months ago, I have worked up a full band version and plan on getting into the studio next week to record it. We will obtain the rights to release it as a digital download on iTunes. So join the mailing list and I’ll let you know when it’s available.

Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers

Formed from the ashes of the Refreshments, Dead Hot Workshop, and the Gin Blossoms, Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers emerged in 1999 as a Southwestern supergroup specializing in literate, pop-tinged Americana. The Arizona-bred frontman Roger Clyne had previously established himself with the Refreshments during the post-grunge heyday of the ’90s. Although the cheeky pop anthem “Banditos” earned the band some national recognition in 1996, the Refreshments were dropped from Mercury Records after their sophomore effort failed to chart as high as its predecessor. Clyne and drummer P.H. Naffah subsequently retreated to Tempe, AZ, where the two composed a slew of new songs during a weeklong excursion through the Sonoran Desert. Intimate shows at local bars followed, and the pair steadily pieced together a lineup of local veterans that would soon comprise Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers.
